KofJ: Charlotte 49ers Season Preview

Maxwell Smart aka KOFJ

The Charlotte 49ers were one the of the most unsound defensive teams in college basketball. This led to the firing of Mark Price after three years and the hiring of Ron Sanchez a disciple of the Tony Bennett program of Virginia and Washington State. The 49ers had some atrocious defense highlighted by some of these stats. – scoring defense 330th in the nation – turnover margin 306th in the nation – rebounding margin 264th in the nation These stats listed above led this team to 2-16 record in conference and a 6-23 overall record. Coach Sanchez leaves a stable program at UVA for a hard rebuild. There is a connection between AD and Sanchez in their vision for the program. Coach Sanchez will have to convince the players to want to be part of the program, represent the city and the jersey of the school. He will need to install the packline defense that made UVA famous. Coach Sanchez will have to teach a disciplined approach that provides freedom when other areas of the teams execution is accomplished. They will have to take care of the ball and take and make quality shots. It will be up to Coach Sanchez to understand his players abilities and limitations for any kind of success. Roster wise they lost a key kog in the backcourt in Andrien White who took off to Wake Forest. That is 15.5ppg and 4.8 rpg to replace and hopefully a transfer who will be eligible by the name of Jordan Sheppard a North Carolina kid to bring that big time program experience and help replace some of the lost scoring. The master and guy with keys to the car is Jon Davis. He flirted with the NBA but chose to return and make a ton of free throws and lead this team. He averaged 17.6ppg and 5.5 apg and he will be looked to raise those averages on a team that is going to be bad again.

Najae Garvin 7.2ppg and 5.0rpg will need to take a big step up. The best way he can do this is using some new found aggression on both ends of the floor to develop his savageness on the low block. Jallan Haslem 4.9ppg and 4.4rpg will need to use his 6:10 frame to get down on the low block and receive those dish passes of drives and command more offensive touches to bring up his offensive stats. This is going to be a very young team and will struggle to win games again this year. However this will provide us some betting value when looking at there games. A team with a new coach that is bringing a night and day type of system change will go through growing pains. This can happen in multiple ways. The games they play in can be a lot lower scoring compared to last year based on their bottom of the pile defensive stat numbers and this change of defensive approach to the packline defense. The offensive team totals may be good to look for unders as Jon Davis is the only proven scorer and if you can shut him down you can shut down the whole team. A team that was 2-16 in conference and lost their 2nd leading scorer should have trouble covering spreads as 8-14pt underdogs. So when looking for value in Charlotte games additional totals and spreads and team total unders are where some betting value could lie. That is it for your preview on the Charlotte 49ers of Conference USA.
