Too soon Budweiser, too soon.

Budweiser runs less than ironic online ad campaign headed into Jays/Rangers ALDS

A spectator threw a Bud Light can at Baltimore Orioles’ outfielder Hyun Soo Kim during the bottom of the 7th American League Wild Card game Tuesday night, missing by only a few feet.

The individual was asked publicly through social media to come forward on Wednesday  by Toronto Police.

The Baltimore Oriole’s were very displeased with the Toronto crowd after the can was thrown. “We’re horrible, we get it. We’re the opponent, we completely understand that,” Orioles outfielder Adam Jones said after the game. “But to throw something at a player, that’s just as pathetic as it gets. So I hope they find the guy and I hope they press charges because (Kim)’s not looking, you hit him in the back of the head and you never know what can happen. That’s a full beer that’s being thrown and that’s just not part of the sport, man. Like I said, call us what you want . . . to put us in harm’s way, man, all we’re trying to do is focus on the game and that’s not part of baseball.”

Buck Showalter, Orioles’ manager also echoed the same disappointment.

“I don’t like it. Nobody likes it. I’m sure the Toronto Blue Jays don’t like it,” he said. “It’s tough when you have that many people in the ballpark and one person does something that reflects poorly on all of them. It can happen in any ballpark. I don’t like anything that puts our guys in harm’s way, just like (John Gibbons) wouldn’t at our place.” Showalter added he did not blame the Rogers Center security for the incident. “I know they’re trying to do a good job with it. Unless you want to have 50,000 police up here and everybody assigned one person, it’s got a chance to happen.”

On Wednesday the Toronto Blue Jays gave a formal apology to the Baltimore Orioles and Major League Baseball.

The suspect in the beer throwing incident was ID’d on Wednesday as Ken Pagan – a PostMedia journalist from Hamilton, Ontario. Pagan made a statement through his lawyer stating that he was “drinking from a cup” at the time the beer can was thrown.

A video posted online however clearly shows Pagan hurl the blue Bud Light can with an underhanded backhand. The can curled inwards and only missed Kim by a few feet.

Last year after a controversial call in the same 7th inning of the infamous ALDS Game 5. Blue Jays fans threw cans of many sorts onto the field for a number of minutes. Some of which came short of the field and hit spectators in the sections below. One individual was arrested during the incident. Broadcast commentators called the fan’s behavior despicable.

Surprisingly, Toronto’s Roger Center is the only Major League ballpark that sells beer in cans. Tuesday’s game vs the Orioles’ might have been the last game where cans will be available for spectators.

“I don’t think there is another ballpark where beer is served in cans,” MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said. “I think from a deterrent perspective, it’s important to follow up and make sure that he’s prosecuted to the extent available.”

Let the pouring begin!

Here’s hoping Blue Jays’ fans are on their best behavior Sunday night as Toronto will host Texas for Game 3 of the ALDS.
