ONE on TNT 1 Odds and Results: Adriano ‘Mikinho’ Moraes does what no UFC flyweight fighter could do, defeated Demetrious Johnson by stoppage, which is exactly what he did just 2 minutes and 24 seconds in the second round.
Moraes caught Johnson with a sneaky upper cut, followed it up with ground and pound and topped it off with an ironic knee to the head that was enough for the referee to call a stoppage to the fight. With the victory, Adriano Moraes retains the ONE Championship Men’s MMA Flyweight gold, but also becomes just the second MMA fighter to defeated Demetrious Johnson in over eight years, and is the first fighter in MMA history to defeat him by stoppage. Mighty Mouse was in fine spirits in his post-fight interview, and gave Moraes a heartfelt congratulations when the two crossed paths backstage, after the fight.
For one brief moment during the week there were prop odds from 1XBet offering Moraes at +700 to win ‘Inside the Distance’. However, those odds quickly came off the board by Wednesday morning, with confusing of the event’s start time and whether or not it would be pre-taped or live came into question for the offshore bookmakers. Ultimately, Moraes cashes at closing odds of +500 to win the fight outright, and is now 7-2 in ONE Championship title fights.
The co-main event saw controversy as Eddie Alvarez was disqualified for illegal punches to the back of head, early in the first round of his bout against Iuri Lapicus. It was a very deflating scene as the commentators argued about the referees decision to give Alvarez a red card and thus awarding Iuri Lapicus with the DQ victory. Sportsbooks recognized Lapicus as the +175 underdog winner, and wagers such as ‘Fight Reaches Round 2: No’ were also graded as wins. Alvarez when asked about the exchange, gave a reply on the TNT broadcast that was turned into an instant MMA meme.
“You put two guys in a steel cage, what do you want?”
Alvarez would add “The referee’s here, whatever call he makes, that’s the call. I apologize. I hope Iuri is totally fine cause this game is so dangerous. All I care about is that everybody in here sincerely is safe and can go home to their family when they’re done. I’m praying for Iuri right now.”
After the bout in the post-fight press conference, Alvarez told MMA media that he was hoping to get the winner of ONE on TNT 2’s main event between ONE FC Lightweight Champion Christian Lee and the man who defeated Alvarez in his ONE Championship debut, Timofey Nastyukhin, or as Alvarez called him ‘Tim Nasty’. It goes without saying that Alvarez is treating this controversy as a win, and is calling his shot on the tail end of the publicity, good or bad.
The ONE on TNT era kicked off with a rather deflating start, which gently reminds the fans of MMA, and those who cover it for a living, there is never a dull moment in this sport. Any day of the week.
